Key to model numbers:  Netgear model numbers can often be used to determine basic switch features, although naming conventions are not precise.  The following may be useful when ascertaining the functionality of a particular model:

Model Prefix

Indicates primary speed and manageability

Model Root Number

Indicates range, management level (if manageable) and number of ports (nn)

Model Suffix

Indicates additional functionality and features

FS - Fast Ethernet Switch - predominantly 10/100 ports

GS - Gigabit Ethernet Switch - predominantly 10/100/1000 ports

M - Managed

6nn - Home Switches

1nn - Business Desktop Switches

5nn - Business Unmanaged Rackmount Switches

7nn - Business Rackmount Smart Switches

72nn - Business Rackmount Layer 2 Managed

73nn - Business Rackmount Layer 3 Managed

T - Smart Managed - basic web-based management

A - Advanced Smart Managed

S - Stackable - can be connected to other units to form a single manageable entity

R - Has static routing capability

P - Some or all ports have Power over Ethernet

F - Usually indicates some fibre capability
