Traditional telephone systems work completely independently from your computer network, and are difficult to deploy and manage.  Now 3Com bring you LAN-based telephony systems and Voice-over-IP, allowing telephones to be plugged into your network.  Want to move a handset?  Unplug it and plug it in again - job done.  Want to change the configuration of a 'phone?  Bring up a picture of the 'phone on your PC and make the changes.

3Com LAN Telephony products give users the best of both worlds: simple, single-network economy and administration, and powerful, standards-based feature sets that make convergence a reality.  3Com’s NBX Communication Systems continue to lead the IP Telephony market. They are cost-effective and deliver more features, applications and services than traditional PBX systems.

3Com can radically simplify your phone system by: -

NBX Communications Systems

This system looks and acts like a traditional business telephone system, yet it's the world's first Ethernet/IP-based product to send voice packets through the LAN or across the WAN - all with crystal-clear audio and the sturdy reliability of a self-contained, non-PC-based unit.  The industry has been talking about convergence for years but now with 3Com's NBX the benefits to your business are clear.

If you are considering upgrading your phone switchboard, or you are moving site, why not contact 3complete to see how you could use NBX to get better value from your telephone system. Call or E-mail us using the button on the left.

There are currently two versions of the NBX system available, the NBX 100 system designed for smaller companies ( up to 150 users or so) and the Superstack 3 NBX system which will support as many as 600 users.

NBX 100

The NBX 100 system is usually supplied as a Chassis Bundle package, and then additional components are added as required.  For this reason, most clients ask us to determine the configuration they need by analysing their requirements.

The systems are graded by the number of auto-attendant ports (concurrent voice-mail users) and the total recordable message length.  This is determined by the licence version of the Advanced Powermail eXchange (APX) software.

Business Telephones.  The NBX business telephone is a high quality handset that connects to your Ethernet network, and puts powerful call handling features at your disposal.  It contains all the functionality that you would expect from a state-of-the-art telephone, including a full-duplex speaker phone, two line LCD display, a new message indicator with one-button access to voice mail.  By using the browser-based NetSet tool, users can easily program their own phone to allocate speed dials and services.  They can even print off the labels to show what the buttons do for slotting into the handset.

The handsets are self-locating on your LAN.  Simply disconnect from the network in one location and plug in somewhere else - your extension, along with all the functions you had before goes with you.  There is even a 10MBPS port on the phone that you can use to attach your PC to the network if access ports are a limitation.

There are also 100MBPS phones, phones with Infra-red ports for synchronising with your PDA, and a basic phone to save cost when full functionality is not required.

Ethernet Power Source   Following this flag will be the Section and Page number of this item in the current 3Com Buyer's Guide  3Com Product Guide P18

As standard, the NBX telephones each have a 'power brick' type power supply.  As an alternative, power can be supplied over the data cabling using Power sources that are located in the wiring cabinets.

Attendant Console.  When a primary receptionist is taking and distributing incoming calls, a traditional 'lamp key field' is often used.  NBX offers an Attendant Console adjunct that is used in combination with a standard handset.  The console allows a receptionist to process multiple calls efficiently and easily.  It offers programming of up to 100 functions or stations via its 50 led equipped buttons.

Headset   Go to this section of the purchasing catalogue

In conjunction with one of our clients we have identified a low cost headset that is compatible with the NBX system.  The unit plugs into your NBX phone and provides high telephone usage staff with a comfortable alternative to using the normal handset, and frees up your hands for keyboard use or other purposes.

Additionally, there are a number of optional software products:

'Softphone' Go to this section of the purchasing catalogue  As an alternative to a handset, how about using your PC?  By using the pcXset software on your Windows (95,98,2000,NT) PC, all the functionality of the handset is reproduced without taking up any additional desk space.  An attached optional headset can be used to reduce extraneous noise to normal telephone levels, and control and dialling of the phone is done on screen.

ConneXtions Gateway.  Go to this section of the purchasing catalogue  To enable IP-based virtual tie-lines between NBX exchanges, a software product called NBX ConnecXtions Gateway is required.  This means that between 2 and 16 concurrent channels can be routed between your NBX systems across your extended network.  The software runs on a standard Windows 2000 or NT server platform (not supplied), and supports H.323, Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and other popular protocols.

IP-Serve. Go to this section of the purchasing catalogue   In its standard form, NBX provides Ethernet telephony services.  If you want to be able to deploy telephone sets across your routed IP network, the NBX IP Serve application suite is required.  The software works by assigning IP addresses to all remote or LAN-attached business telephones, and to their NBX 100 analogue line cards.  This lets any remote telephone user or remote office with a multiprotocol router gain access to the NBX 100 functionality as though they were directly networked.
