Emerson / Liebert UPS units contain batteries that are used to provide power in the event of a loss of mains supply.  As with all battery technology, these batteries have a finite lifespan.  Factors including the ambient temperature, the number of discharges, the number of switches to and from battery power and the equipment power-draw all have an effect on the life of the battery, so it is not possible to determine how long they will last.  Emerson suggest that a battery will generally start to get tired after three or four years of normal use, but that heavy usage, or failure to fully charge a battery at least three or four times a year, can shorten battery life.

To allow for this, most units have hot-swap battery packs and battery condition detection circuitry.  If the UPS indicates that the battery needs replacing, it will probably not provide the full run-time in the event of a power loss, and this will deteriorate over time.  The following indications are given (please refer to the manual for detailed visual and audible indicator meanings):

  • PowerSure Personal XT - Fault LED flashes red and three beeps are emitted every 2 seconds

  • PowerSure PSA series - battery LED flashes amber and a long beep is emitted every minute

  • PowerSure Interactive 2 series - battery LED amber and long beep is emitted every minute

  • UPStation GXT2 series - Fault (red), and first (A) and third (C) diagnostic LEDs are lit (and possibly the Bypass LED) and a two-second beep is emitted every minute
