Power Distribution Units (PDU) are used to supply power from a single source (usually a mains plug or UPS outlet) to multiple devices, such as servers or switches, usually in a rack or cabinet. APC make three types of Rack Mount PDU as follows: Basic Rack PDU These PDUs are the most basic and consist of a single input and multiple outputs. Various mixes of input and output sockets are available. Horizontal Mount units are narrow enough to fit into a standard 19" rack mounting, but can usually also be mounted vertically. Vertical mount units are too long to mount horizontally.
These are similar to the Basic Rack PDUs, but they have the addition of a display meter which shows the aggregate power load of the attached equipment. This is very useful when initially connecting up equipment, and can also be used to monitor the ongoing load as it varies due to fluctuating factors such as disk and processor use and fan speeds. These units (except the AP7611) are also network manageable and can be accessed using a web browser to define alarm limits etc. Switched Rack PDU
These are similar to the Metered units, but in addition to network
monitoring, they can be network controlled. This means that the
outlets can be switched on and off using the management interface.
